Last week we had an outdoor dog shower installed. It’s fantastic! Lovely powerful jet and adjustable temperature meant Marley was a happy dog trying it out this weekend. If you’re in the Preston area I’d recommend Dirty Dawg outdoor showers

https://www.facebook.com/dirtydawgoutdoorshowers

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-88545030597199654412023-12-27T17:35:00.001+00:002023-12-27T17:35:04.028+00:002023 - The year of LEJOG
Our usual walks took us over 1000 miles on the virtual lands end to John O’Groats trip this year. Still not tired of the Green, Fairhaven and St Anne’s. Hardly been to the beach this year but seen plenty of the sea.

Early summer was lovely. Amazing weather and days in the garden spent watching the world go by. The new BBQ got plenty of action. A new garden room spelt the end of good weather and feels like it’s rained since July - meaning a very waterlogged and muddy garden, but it will soon be spring again.

Marley has had a good year, in his prime, and looking forward to 2024.
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-69084544309843951572023-01-17T23:33:00.004+00:002023-01-17T23:38:47.306+00:00Still loving Fylde
I can’t believe how long it is since I posted! Life is sill good. Lots of changes over the past year but we are still loving the Fylde Coast and rarely go anywhere else. We ventured up to the Lakes and climbed Langdale again but other than that we walk around Lytham, Fairhaven and South Shore. Marley is a little calmer these days but not much, we’ve just learnt to accept and manage situations better. It’s great he can be trusted playing with great nieces and nephews now they are all a little older but he’s still reactive to bikes, birds and sometimes runners. It is what it is!

Last time I blogged we were coming out of restrictions. Seems like a strange dream. Back in the office most days now although my better half is always at home, so Marley enjoys company pretty much all the time.

This year we are walking a virtual Lands End to John O’Groats by a long route. Already nearly out of Cornwall. Just under 1000 miles to go!
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-21530223580343348982022-04-09T11:08:00.001+00:002022-04-09T11:08:32.549+00:00In to Spring
Whilst the posts may be few and far between, life is good. Eventually caught COVID along with most people after Christmas, which meant 10 days of isolation and no walks. 2 years ago, I could not have conceived the idea that we’d not go out for 10 days. It’s the longest time in my life (fortunately) that I’ve been housebound.

The rest probably didn’t do the dog much good as soon after he was back at the vets with a gland problem, but all fine now. Walks have, as usual, been down the lanes and around Fairhaven area in the main. I never tire of it! We’ve had some glorious weather and sun rises, walks in the snowdrops, daffodils and now Tulips at Lytham Hall. I love spring. The garden is starting to come alive too, and the ground has dried out a bit so plenty of playtime with the ball.

So far as COVID goes, hope that’s the worst over. Life is getting back to normal, but a new normal.
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-55156252426175129122021-12-13T21:49:00.003+00:002021-12-13T21:49:27.690+00:00Autumn
The absence of posts doesn’t mean we’ve not been out and about. Not that we’ve done much different…most weekends we’ve walked somewhere by the sea or estuary. Walking along the wall at Fairhaven is now a favourite rather than a place to do training walks. It’s a little manic at times but when I look back I’m reminded of how far we’ve come. Lytham Hall has remained a favourite although less so now the rain and mud have arrived. We’ve not been to the beach much, but through choice, as we’ve been happy enough wandering elsewhere.

Morning and evening walks have been a bit dull lately. Roadworks have meant we’ve been a bit of an island here, and when it has rained heavily it gets flooded each way we walk. Happily, roadworks have now gone so we should get a bit more variety.

There have been plenty of trips to the office since summer. It’s been the norm for at least a few days a week with a few trips away too. Working from home where you can is now back so for the next few weeks at least the dog will be happy.

Looking forward Christmas and a week off in the new year!
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-65669797134348355442021-09-08T21:35:00.002+00:002021-09-08T21:35:29.166+00:00Summer
Wow. Time flies and it’s so long since I did a blog entry. It’s nearly autumn but summer has been good. Working from home has continued in the main. The dog is still a great work companion. Work hours are much longer than they would have been if in the office regularly so it doesn’t mean he gets walked lots more, but he is happy with company. We had a few trips beyond Fylde over the summer, Scorton, Beacon Fell and Longridge Fell, but in the main we’ve spent time round the lanes, Lytham Hall, the Prom and up to St Anne’s from Fairhaven.

The dog got spooked by a boisterous young pup back in June and took flight (he was happily safe) so not so much off lead walking lately other than with the long line on the beach. Think he would have taken off again on beacon Fell had he not been on the lead as two cockers decided to gang up on him. I’ve never really had to worry about a nervous dog running off before so it’s definitely changed our habits in the past few months.

Still feeling so lucky to have such amazing places to walk close by. We’ve been to the pub again a couple of times which was hard work. Lunch in the garden is easier! All in all it’s been a good summer and we are currently on another holiday at home with a dose of antibiotics for infected anal glands- lovely! Hope we get back to Cornwall next year and everyone else goes abroad once more!
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-20636446439753933632021-04-03T20:40:00.001+00:002021-04-03T20:40:06.225+00:00Springtime walks and garden galore
Spring has arrived, with lighter evenings, warm sunshine and since Monday visits to gardens. It’s been a great few weeks! A week off meant lots of morning walks on the beach followed by digging borders in the garden. The dog had a ball! This week has been amazing, with a few friends and family in the garden at various times, a couple of trips to see others close by, and best of all playing with his ‘new’ cousins and the twins. Life has been tiring being a springer spaniel this week!

As always, Easter is generally for staying local. A far cry from the worry of last year when I wasn’t sure whether off lead walks would be a thing of the past!

We seem to have pretty much cracked visitors and the boys now. No worries provided they play with him and don’t try to play football without him! Birds are a bit of a nightmare at times, but at times rather than all the time!

Running ended with an injured knee in early March. Hopefully one day we’ll be back to it. Until then, we will continue to love our walks.
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-51716359796312485172021-02-07T15:25:00.001+00:002021-02-07T15:25:26.563+00:00Lockdown 3 - More of the same
Here we are in February. Lockdown 3 continues. No chance of a huge amount of excitement these days but we have enjoyed walks down the Lane and a few trips to the Green or the beach for a run off lead. We’ve had plenty of ice and a little snow over the past few weeks, but nothing like we’d have found on the moors. Walking in heavy snow on the beach at Lytham made a change though. Couch25k continues and the dog is making a good running companion. Of course it means we are going a bit further than we would a few times a week, so despite lockdown plenty of exercise. Can’t wait for warmer weather though and to be able to sit in the garden.

Like plenty of other dogs he is enjoying work, lying quietly through daily Teams calls. A year ago I’d not have imagined it. I don’t suppose we will see normality this year, but maybe some walks with family by Easter. In the meantime, we will continue to enjoy what we have around us.

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-1358457133504310242021-01-10T21:49:00.002+00:002021-01-10T21:49:21.367+00:00Beaches, lanes and lockdown 3
So, we’ve made it to January! December was pretty good in terms of walks. Lots of weekend trips to the beach at St Annes which was great, and a few evening walks along the Green at Lytham. Christmas wasn’t quite the Christmas we’d planned, with just the three of us and Zoom calls on Christmas Day. It was lovely to get on the beach on Christmas morning though, with the weather being particularly kind. January was always going to be difficult, we knew that with so many mixing on Christmas Day, but lockdown 3 came quickly as we started a week off work. It was back to the lanes nearby for walks this week, nice but not as nice as a run on the beach. There’s been plenty of social media debate about driving for exercise, and I would if I or the dog needed it, but the general guidance is to stay local to your village, town or part of your city. For us that’s meant the lanes for the past few days. The dog has enjoyed himself though, with a good long walk every day and week 1 of couch to 5k thrown in along the way, and a bit of snow and ice. He’s a very athletic dog and will make a good running companion over the coming weeks, particularly as there’s nowhere great to let him off lead on the doorstep

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-43012795064657480032020-12-06T11:16:00.000+00:002020-12-06T11:16:00.935+00:00Autumn in Warton
Can’t quite believe it’s December. Where did this year go? Where did autumn go? Marley has had a good time I think. Beach most weekends, or Lytham Green and Fairhaven. Lytham Green has proved a great place for an evening walk with enough light to see, and views across the Ribble. Sometimes we’ve been faced with a red glow in the sky towards Tarleton, which turned out to be lights reflecting on the misty sky from the greenhouses....to make the tomatoes grow apparently. Yesterday we had a relatively big trip out back to Worden Park, which was lovely but mucky. Of course we’ve not seen too many people during lockdown 2 (which was nothing like lockdown 1) other than numerous delivery people and passers by. Given that, he’s better out and about on the beach. I am wary of, rather than dread, runners. Today I gave him a bit of a test out with 2 young lads who looked like they’d cope if he jumped at them. Whilst he ran right to them he didn’t jump, before running back to me. Seconds later he was off after them again but turned back before he reached them. I call that success!

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-75174129840176669772020-10-25T18:33:00.000+00:002020-10-25T18:33:14.780+00:0014 years of blogging
When the clocks go back it’s a happy and sad time. I remember my walk in 2006 with Finney at Malham so well, and also our walk 10 years later. He was the best dog anyone could wish for! Marley, now nearly two and a half, slept in a little later, but we were still up early and out on the beach at 8. We had a lovely walk from St Anne’s to Star Gate, which has become our usual Sunday morning walk. We still don’t travel far. I feel so lucky to be able to walk down country lanes from home, or along Lytham Green before or after work if I choose. We are still working from home and although they are long days, Marley has settled well and most of the time my fellow Skype and Zoomers wouldn’t know he was there.

The only real change to our routine has been a new path, not far away, down a farm track to fields. A nice walk albeit quite short. We’ve also had a week off in September, a stay at home vacation again, but nice all the same and we ventured to the beer garden of our local pub for the first time since lockdown.

Restrictions mean we don’t see that many people face to face so it’s nice to say the odd socially distanced hello out on our walks. Hope next year life is more normal, but couldn’t wish to have a more lovely dog to spend my days with.

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-16245972858185705782020-08-30T20:17:00.000+00:002020-08-30T20:17:01.402+00:00A stay local summer
Nearly September. What a year so far. July and August have been good. We’ve had a couple of lovely trips to see mum and family in Derbyshire. Mostly though we’ve been for walks locally, down the lane, on Lytham Green, Fairhaven and St Annes Beach. It’s been great, especially the beach.

I’ve ditched the harness some of the time lately. He walks better without and has been trying to shake it off a bit. We’ve done plenty of training in the past few weeks. At a distance of 15 feet or so he is coping better with bikes and runners. Didn’t help today though when some idiot decided distance was no object as he ran past about 2 feet away. Should have given Marley 6 ft of lead! Bikes are a bit better too. If we keep up the rewards on the Granny’s Bay path I think next year might be the year we crack it :). Birds are generally much less of an issue - did I really say that?

M
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-84083739653623710752020-07-07T22:08:00.000+00:002020-07-07T22:08:04.098+00:00Lytham, Witch Wood, Fairhaven and the GreenMarley is a little under the weather at the moment, just a bug I suspect, but we’ve had some lovely walks on the beach and on Lytham Green over the past few weeks. Still working from home, he’s happy as can be, sleeping well (giving up on him sleeping downstairs has been the key to good sleep since we left Pemwortham) and now the turf in the garden has taken root he’s a great space to roam in.

Last weekend we walked from Lyrham, through Witch Wood to Fairhaven and back along the front. It was a lovely walk, and our first woodland footpath since lockdown. Social distancing on the path through the woods wasn’t too hard, with plenty of ‘passing places’. Marley enjoyed a good sniff round, on lead. Fairhaven is starting to look great, with new sea defences along Granny’s Bay, all stepped so you can sit and watch the world go by. The new path back to Lytham Green was equally lovely, with the tide in to to the wall and a strong breeze making it very invigorating.

It’s a long long time since we walked through Witch Wood, on Boxing Day I think many years ago when Finney was a pup. I didn’t really remember it but think the fencing to the railway tracks is much improved. Definitely a walk we’ll do again.
We moved in to our new home in Warton two weeks ago. Things are gradually returning to something that feels more normal, but still far from normal of course. The mood of the nation has certainly changed in recent weeks. Black Lives Matters rather than Covid dominates the news. The roads are busier. Clap for The NHS and Key Workers has stopped. Schools are starting to take more pupils. More people are back to work, but of course many still furloughed.

From our perspective the past 3 weeks have seen huge changes. We worked at the ‘new’ house for a week before we moved in, to help us and Marley adjust really and to test out the 4g broadband. It meant a good transition from Marley’s point of view, so moving day was no big deal, other than he didn’t get to see his uncle Adam and auntie Linda that night. Over the past few weeks we’ve still been working from home. Marley has been fantastic. Most of the time I forget now he’s in the room when I’m in Skype calls. He just chills out.

In the past few week we’ve been down to the beach at St Anne’s a few times. First time was a bit tense given he’d not been off lead for months. The long line was great as a confidence builder. Today it stayed in the car during our morning walk on the beach. No problems, he was just great.

Today was Denise’s birthday so a day of socially distanced visitors. Again, he was pretty good. The twins were here this morning which inevitably drove him wild, but provided he got a cuddle he was happy. The sky engineer was a different matter. She had lots of tools dangling from her belt which was all a bit much! Linda, Adam, Jack and our old neighbours Jo and the girls popped round in the garden too, at different times, so it was by far the most people he’s seen in a long while.

We are loving the new home. Our local walk is lovely, with cows, sheep, hares and wildlife all around. Lytham Green is under 10 minutes. The beach about 20 minutes tops.

Started a week of holiday at home yesterday, our first break since Christmas, so feeling very lucky.
Thankfully our family and close friends remain well, but hearts go out to those who have lost their loved ones. As Northern Italy went in to lockdown earlier this year if used Instagram to try to get a glimpse of what life was like. I remember thinking that it didn’t tell me much, as photos were generally filled with meals and pictures of quiet countryside. I get that now. Most of the past 8 weeks has been filled with food, work from home and one walk a day. Dog training has been lost from our weekend routine, Marley has not been off the lead outside of the garden; how do you Social distance when your over enthusiastic dog runs up to a complete stranger? Greetings with other dogs are few and far between, and only on long leads. We’ve been lucky though to be in good health and have a lovely place to walk from our doorstep.

We’ve stil not moved in to the new house, but removals happen this week. Won’t be long before Marley has the run of his new garden and a few new local walks. The last week has been so much better with two walks a day, but although we’re allowed we’ve not driven anywhere for exercise. Maybe next week.

The video highlight of the past 8 weeks has to be a sponsored training session for the Lancashire Covid-19 Support Fund.
At this point, Easter weekend, we are still living with family, which Marley loves, so if there is such a thing as fate, it was probably fate that meant we were between house moves when all this happened. We completed on the new house a few weeks ago, in the first week of restrictions, so one day I hope we get to move in, get the garden turfed, get Marley’s toys back, most of which is in storage, and get on with enjoying life to the max.

Four adults working at home with Marley hasn’t been as challenging as it would have been not so long ago. He is pretty settled for most of the day and I so look forward to a short walk out later in the evening. Days tend to blur on to one though as it’s so busy, so I keep having to remind myself to do some training with him to stop bad habits appearing. Today I decided to reverse our routine a bit so we had a good early morning walk before most people were up and about. Maybe that’s the way to go as he’s the most chilled he’s been for a while this morning, and it feels good to have had some decent exercise. Not that our walk would normally have been such a highlight, all along pavements and what would normally be busy roads, but it’s a nice feeling to be able to cross Blackpool Road to allow a jogger to pass, without taking your life in your hands.

The Green at Wrea Green is our local walk, so we’re really lucky to be able to wander round the Dub, watch the ducks and get some fresh air in a nice environment within 5 minutes walk. Like plenty of other people though, we’d rather be on the beach or the moors.

Keep safe.

What a lovely place! I had a walk round the grounds 15 years or so ago and how it’s changed! After walking alongside the long driveway leading to the house, which looks very smart these days, we wandered past the lake and gardens before settling down to a pot of tea, and hot chocolate for the boys, in the dog friendly cafe. We will definitely be back there.
It’s odd as I thought I’d really miss it, but I’ve not. Happily, we are staying with relatives until we can move in to the new house, maybe in a couple of weeks.

Marley has settled brilliantly. I think he loves it here....calm at home during the week and lots of comings and goings at weekends. He has been in daycare most days as we can’t leave him alone at all in our temporary home. He seems to love it there too, and now drags me to the door and off he goes without a second thought. The impact of all this change is the opposite of what I’d expected. He is much calmer, hasn’t been jumping on furniture, sleeps with us all night and is excited to get back home. He went to the groomers yesterday who thought we’d swapped him for a different dog!

Walks have been great these past few weeks. Lytham is just a 10 minute drive so we’ve had plenty of walks on the green and a few walks on Blackpool Prom and up to Bispham. I love it being so close to the sea. We’ve not been on the beach in this windy weather but that will come. Daffodils are out and spring is coming. Life is good. It feels like we’re waiting for an apocalypse to happen so I’m so happy we have enjoyed this time.
This morning there were hints of daylight on our walk at 6.30am, and it’s not pitch black when we get home from work. The first signs of spring are here, albeit we have another storm to come this weekend!

We’ve not been up to much in terms of exciting walks. Most are in our local area, Bee Lane or over to Walton Park. Last weekend we got to Derbyshire which was wet and wild but lovely. We had a good walk around Matlock, Matlock Bath and Starkholmes as usual. We’ve also had a few trips to the beach at Lytham, and an evening walk on Lytham Prom after fish and chips.

We move in a few weeks so the house is full of boxes. I’ll miss this place, and I’m sure Marley will too, but sure we will have fun settling in to new, albeit temporary, surroundings.
A whopping three hour dog training class yesterday saw our first ever go at man trailing. I think Marley got the idea, finding the hiding person twice and of course now regarding her as his latest treat dispenser!

Friday saw a return to Formby for a fabulous walk, pretty much all off lead, up to the wreck of the Star of Hope at Ainsdale and back. It was probably Marley’s longest off lead walk to date so he was shattered for the rest of the day.

Thursday was a trip out to lunch at the Watermill at Ings. It’s a great dog friendly pub. Marley behaved pretty well other than 10 seconds of wanting to play with another dog and it’s 2 foot high companion. Other than when kids are looking at him or running past he’s pretty good at settling in pubs now.

Other highlights of the season were some off lead time with the twins. Can’t say they were too impressed with his contribution to their indoor cricket matches but he joined in Christmas Day present opening without total carnage, before it did all become too much and he had some time out in the car. The adults only meal a few days later was rather calmer!

The build up to Christmas was less enjoyable with Marley picking up a rather nasty stomach bug. No idea how he caught it, but it followed a snowy but rather muddy trip to Tockholes. After a few days he had a trip to the vets, some probiotics and special food, which did the trick. Sadly it meant he missed a weeks training classes and a day out, but we were relieved it cleared up almost as quickly as it came on.
Under perfect blue skies with a hard frost underfoot we headed up Stickle Ghyll from the National Trust car park in Langdale, gaining height quickly before emerging at the Tarn for a brief ice cold paddle. With no sign of tiring, Marley continued enthusiastically to Harrison Stickle, passing a few fell runners, walkers and dogs on route, where we shared a cheese sandwich and a drink of water. Descent was much harder on the icy ground, taking as long to get down as it did to reach the summit. All good for trying to get some close lead walking though.

Saturday brought a few hours of training classes, which are going well. Over the past few months we’ve seen a big change. Yes, he’s still a crazy dog but he can hold it together for a meet and greet most of the time. We not yet cracked birds, bikes and joggers, but he doesn’t kick off quite as much these days. He’s though the worst of puppyhood and turning in to a good boy, bit by bit.

Sunday saw another first with a walk up Rivington Pike. I was surprised how much it’s changed in the three years or so since I was last up there. Looking very smart on the terraces and by the Japanese pond. We were joined by lots of Santa’s doing a charity walk at the top. Couldn’t have wished for a better morning walk, which ended with some training amongst the brave or foolhardy bikers who had come over on the Belmont road in such icy conditions.
On a gorgeous Sunday morning we wandered down to the Ribble and Avenham Park, through the autumn leaves, enjoying the sunshine. En route we passed runners, bikes and kids. No kick offs although of course he was interested. Happily the road is still closed to traffic. Not sure it will be open by the time we leave this place.

Also had a first visit to doggy daycare this week. Think Marley loved it!

Finally, the new link Road is open to pedestrians and this weekend we wandered over the bridge, down the tram road to Factory Lane, and enjoyed a stroll around Walton Park. It was so odd to walk along roads and paths that have felt so far away! It’s like two communities of dog walkers have merged in to one 😊

Other than local walks, we’ve had a good trip to the beach at St Anne’s, plenty of trips to Lytham Green and of course Saturday visits to dog training club. Marley is still very excitable, but maybe a little calmer week by week. Tonight I was confident enough to walk with headphones in, one of life’s little pleasures, for the first time in our walking together history!

Hopefully we will get a few decent walks in over the next month or so, after which we might be on the move. Very exciting.Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36789533.post-41514472814589914582019-10-05T18:38:00.001+00:002019-10-21T21:14:05.138+00:00Summer’s goneSummer has gone and this week we had our first frost! Been a busy summer, things on most weekends and also another week away in September. Walks have been mainly local, with plenty of visits to our local park, a few trips to the beach and of course lots of weekends at Worden. Oddly enough we’ve not been on the moors for months. We had a day up in the Lakes, where Marley dragged me up Orrest Head which was nice, followed by a walk around Tarn Hows with mum and my sister. Mostly though summer was about training, continuing to work on loose lead walking and learning to trust him off lead (only when it’s quiet!). We then had a bit of a disastrous period following his neutering, where he was out of action for a few weeks. Happily we still managed to ge5 down to Cornwall in September, staying near the stunning Cape Cornwall.

Now I’m looking forward to autumn weekends, a few trips to the woods or beach and hopefully a dog who continues to get a little bit calmer. My main mission remains to stop reactivity to kids, birds and bikes but hopefully have some fun with it.
With a huge wooded garden it was pretty much perfect for chilling out, games with a ball or just sniffing round after the visiting rabbits and foxes.

It wasn’t far from Porthleven so we got a few early morning walks in along the coast path and around Loe Pool, somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit. Towards the end of our visit I realised Porthleven beach welcomes dogs before 9am so as the tide was out and a calm sea we also had a stroll on the sands.

We visited plenty of pubs and cafes as usual, but this time there was more outside eating and drinking to be done. That proved a challenge is there were playing kids or birds getting close. Whilst he is calming down a bit, he still goes nuts, especially when kids are around. Given that, the lead stayed in for much of the time out and about but the long line was invaluable again as he had his first proper paddle in the sea at Porthluny.

After all the excitement of a summer holiday life back home seems a lot calmer. Even walking on the main road is easier, but not easy, now. Months of training might be stating to pay off!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17300399536940385886noreply@blogger.com2
